Then in short, you are not legally allowed to run Win10 as a VM.Īpologies as your main post brought up VDI and so I (we) expanded a little on that. I am closing this thread out as I don't need to P2V anymore.

The vendor has their own servers I recently acquired anyways, so I can get the NVR nack onto a physical machine where it's actually supposed to go, not on a windows 10 OEM machine from 2010. If VDI requires some drawn out need for an agreement of some type with Microsoft, then I will just redo the NVR.

The question was about what I need, specifically, to run wind 10 pro as a VM. This windows machine houses vendor software that I am not going to be just slapping together some linux solution for.

I don't know how the thread got onto linux and zoneminder. If you want to use the software on more than one virtual device, you must obtain a separate license for each instance.

This license allows you to install only one instance of the software for use on one device, whether that device is physical or virtual. A hardware partition or blade is considered to be a device. Device. In this agreement, “device” means a hardware system (whether physical or virtual) with an internal storage device capable of running the software. Updating or upgrading from non-genuine software with software from Microsoft or authorized sources does not make your original version or the updated/upgraded version genuine, and in that situation, you do not have a license to use the software.ī. Under this agreement, we grant you the right to install and run one instance of the software on your device (the licensed device), for use by one person at a time, so long as you comply with all the terms of this agreement. It defines "device" as a physical or virtual system. I would read the following as you can use Retail version as a virtual guest. I also setup DDNS and a port forward (with secure PWs) and can get to it from anywhere that is connected to Internet. Using very little resources and does what it needs to do. Went with Zoneminder and system is nearly idle. Moved to Ispy, and that was somewhat better, but costs $70/year. On any windows software it would use almost 100% CPU most of the time. I went through this with my home system, Tried several different softwares on an aging Lenovo with 1st gen Core i5. But the resources used by Zoneminder are very low compared to most Windows based Surveillance software.

The best way of proceed would be to install Ubuntu on an old PC or laptop and trying it out. I say experiment because if you haven't used Linux before then without the interest and enthusiasm to make it work then you cannot succeed. If you wanted a simple free open source solution then you could experiment with It works on Linux and so you can do what you want without worrying about the licence conditions.
